HOW TO “THINK OUTSIDE THE BUILDING”

Newman Alumni Center at the University of Miami Campus, Coral Gables, FL

Think Tank I: Innovations in Healthcare

March 9-11, 2011 Boston, Massachusetts

The Think Tank on "Innovations in Health Care" convened in March as the technological opportunities for improved health, the demand for better and more equitable services, and the ever escalating costs of health continue to threaten the economic and social stability of nations around the world. The program generated lively discussion among panelists, the ALI Fellows, and students. It considered innovations in health care in both industrialized and developing countries, and sought new ways of achieving the goals of health security, health care quality and health equity for people everywhere.

Think Tank III: Revitalizing Cities

Leading Social Innovation for Urban Solutions

April 28-30, 2011 Cambridge, Massachusetts

Presented by both the Advanced Leadership Initiative and The Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice, the Revitalizing Cities Think Tank’s goal was to reconceive the urban agenda. While we have witnessed social progress in cities in the latter half of the 20th century, urgent domestic and international challenges remain. The discussion of the three days sought to answer these questions: Why has there not been more progress? What's missing? What are the emerging social innovations? How can we build a better social infrastructure? Tackling these issues requires not only cross-sector thinking but also advanced leadership to identify and enact 21st century solutions. The event involved more than 100 prominent public officials, experts, advocates, social entrepreneurs, thinkers, and community leaders. It presented concrete examples of innovative and proven strategies, and fostered dialogue on how experienced leaders can help fill leadership gaps.
