ALI Welcomes New Faculty Board Members Jerold Kayden and Cornel West

The Advanced Leadership Initiative (ALI) is proud to announce the addition of two new members to its Faculty Board, Jerold Kayden of the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and Cornel West of the Harvard Divinity School and Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

ALI aims to unleash the potential of experienced leaders to help solve society’s most pressing challenges. Its mission is to provide world-class education, skill building and collaboration opportunities to a diverse, global community of experienced and committed leaders, enabling sustainable social impact at scale. The ALI Faculty Board engages Faculty from 10 schools across the Harvard campus to advance inter-disciplinary learning and collaboration on social impact leadership.

Jerold Kayden will join the Faculty Board from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Kayden, an urban planner and lawyer, is the Frank Backus Williams Professor of Urban Planning and Design and specializes in land use and environmental law, public and private development, public space, and urban disasters and climate change. Among Kayden’s books is Privately Owned Public Space: The New York City Experience and Landmark Justice: The Influence of William J. Brennan on America’s Communities. Kayden has advised national and local governments worldwide, as well as the World Bank, the United States Agency for International Development, and the United Nations Development Programme.

Cornel West will join the Faculty Board from the Harvard Divinity School and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. West is Professor of the Practice of Public Philosophy in the Department of African and African American Studies. He has written 20 books and edited 13, including his classics Race Matters and Democracy Matters, and his memoir, Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud. West is a frequent commentator on CNN and other media outlets and has appeared in over 25 documentary films.  He is committed to advancing Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy of “telling the truth and bearing witness to love and justice”

Both Kayden and West will bring deep experience and insights about social impact to the Faculty Board. “As scholars and leaders, Professor Kayden and Professor West’s unique voices and expertise will enrich our board and our program.” said Meredith Rosenthal, ALI Faculty Chair and C. Boyden Gray Professor of Health Economics and Policy at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. “As our fellows and alumni engage in wide-ranging social impact strategies, guidance from our diverse and engaged Faculty Board is critical to ALI’s mission. The expertise in sustainability, urban planning and design, racial justice, and ethics that our new board members bring to ALI comes at a critical time as the world begins to recover and rebuild from the pandemic. We are excited to welcome them to our Board.”
