Edgar Blatchford
2027 ALI Fellow

Edgar Blatchford brings to ALI decades of leadership in Indigenous governance, public policy, economic development, education, and community advocacy. An Inupiaq and Yup’ik leader, Edgar served as Alaska’s Commissioner of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development under two governors, led major rural development and fisheries initiatives, and held senior leadership roles with Chugach Alaska Native Corporation. He also founded Alaska’s largest weekly newspaper chain, amplifying the voices of rural and Alaska Native communities, and spent more than 25 years teaching Alaska Native Studies, journalism, rural policy, and Indigenous governance at the University of Alaska Anchorage. His work has focused on strengthening Native self-determination, advancing economic opportunity, preserving Indigenous perspectives in public policy, and expanding educational pathways for Native and rural students. Edgar continues to contribute as a scholar, advisor, author, and mentor on Indigenous governance, Alaska Native policy, and community development.
